Getting an old Computer online with Android Ethernet tethering - 82MHz

@82mhz I don’t know why I didn’t think the solution would be that simple. Interesting post!
@qsky
Thanks! It took me a long time to think of this, too... but better late than never ;)
@82mhz USB tethering is soooo cool. 🤩
I did that just yesterday, albeit with a more modern computer. I took my older kid to his music lessons and sat outside beneath a tree, with my work laptop hooked up to the internet with USB tethering.
I've also used it a couple of times on my desktop PC. The WiFi dongle I use for that requires custom drivers on Linux and every now and then after kernel updates it would no longer work and I had to pull in a new version from the internet. Just...well, you need internet for the drivers and the WiFi dongle for internet. 😅
@irgndsondepp USB-tethering is great, and it's even better and easier than using an ethernet-dongle! But it only works on Systems from the last 20 years or so (XP has drivers for it, but they need to be activated, which is a bit of a hassle).
For everything older that isn't an option, but since ethernet-tethering is a thing, now I have a solution for this problem, too 😉

@82mhz get out of here!

Thanks very much for this recommendation!

@fluidlogic
You're very welcome 😊
@82mhz Not related to ethernet tethering, one small, inconsequential thing I miss from Windows 95 are the preset colour schemes. Like there's one called "sand" that changes your toolbar colours and accents. I went looking for something like this in Win11 but it no longer exists! You have to choose your own colour scheme and fiddle around to get what you want.
@srgower
Oh yeah I remember those! Back then things were a lot more customizable and fun...
@82mhz @srgower this is so true, and why 95 and 98 will always be my favorites. 2000 was ok, but it was already starting to lose what made 95 and 98 so great.

@82mhz

Cool idea. I wondered about tethering to my phone when our internet is down. I thought of wireless, but not ethernet.

@ajlewis2 There's also USB tethering if you have a modern OS... just connect the phone via USB to the PC and enable USB tethering and it should share the network connection directly.

@82mhz

Thanks, I'll try that. I'm new to smartphones and this is another plus I'm finding out about.
