Uther Doul, in The Scar (2002), by China Miéville
I loved this book. It reminded me a bit of the novels of fellow POM Michael Moorcock, especially the vibe of the Dancers at the End of Time. Must get hold of Perdido Street Station (2000) and Iron Council (2004) so I've read the whole trilogy.
