We Treated Potholes Like Software Bugs and Accidentally Built a Civic Hacking Playbook | HackerNoon

We treated potholes like software bugs, hacked the visibility layer instead of the asphalt, and discovered that one weird civic experiment can spread

@etc = yes I heard about that :)

In Ireland in 1991, long before social networks, anonymous activists in County Cavan started to paint bright yellow circles around potholes. The local community supported this, but the local authorities did not.
That prompted the formation of CRAG (Cavan Road Action Group) which ran 4 candidates in Cavan in the 1991 Local Government Elections. The same yellow paint was also used for slogans like "NO ROADS NO VOTES" on the roads.
All 4 CRAG candidates were elected.

@dec23k whoa. Thanks. That is super interesting!

The ground in that part of Ireland is very stony, with poor natural drainage around most roads. Some of the official pothole repair efforts were washed out by heavy rain after a few weeks. The worst of the potholes were unsafe for any wheeled vehicle to drive over.

CRAG produced a "Video Nasty" of a small car driving around the worst roads, and sold VHS copies to cover their election costs.
