Lahore Restores Historical Names and Heritage Sites to Revive Cultural Legacy

Lahore, one of Pakistan's major cities, is undergoing a significant cultural restoration project nearly 80 years after the partition. The Lahore Heritage Area Revival (LHAR) initiative, launched in 2025 under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and initially envisioned by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, aims to restore historical Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and colonial-era names to the city's streets and neighborhoods. Key changes include reverting Islampura to Krishan Nagar, Rehman Gali to Ram Gali, and Sunnat Nagar to Sant Nagar, among others. Colonial names like Lawrence Gardens and Queens Road have also been reinstated. Beyond street renaming, the project includes restoring heritage sites such as Minto Park (Greater Iqbal Park), historical cricket grounds, and a traditional wrestling arena known for legends like Gama Pehalwan. This initiative seeks to boost heritage tourism, improve Pakistan’s global image, and attract diplomatic and economic support while signaling social stability to international institutions like the IMF. Despite longstanding concerns about minority rights in Pakistan, this restoration effort has faced surprisingly little organized opposition, reflecting a growing interest in preserving the city’s pre-partition cultural and architectural heritage.
