TIL "from the river to the sea" is now a banned phrase in Queensland, 20 people are being charged, maximum penalty two years in jail. Insane.

@brettm The most bizzarre thing about that phrase, is we've had tourism advertising campaigns advertising Brisbane, featuring that phrase.

Apparently we can't talk about water flowing from Brisbane River to the "sea" (Moreton Bay).

@brettm ♬ it’s like a cold wind in December / when we don't see eye to eye / but I want you to remember / I'm still on your side / when you need me, girl / still on your side / and as sure as the river runs to the sea / there'll have to be times, we both disagree have to be times, we both disagree ♬

Jimmy has you covered. Just blast this song out and see what happens 🤣

@peterrenshaw @brettm Barnsey and Farnsey both, then!

@brettm “if that use might reasonably be expected to make a member of the public feel menaced, harassed or offended”… yes; it is utterly nuts. The kind of menacing, harassing and offending they are talking about was ALREADY illegal.

It achieves literally nothing good; it’s the kind of stupid law that’s main effect is it teaches everyone that laws can be utterly stupid.
