Today's Google Announcement that they are essentially killing search and making it just AI summaries so you don't need to go to the original sites may be a blessing in disguise. Present day content creators that really produce content will be strangled off. The new paradigm will be feeding the LLM bots. What will they be fed? They'll be fed more LLM generated content. It'll be a human centipede of content. Those of us who want that, which sadly is probably like >80% of the population, will go to their big tech LLM portals as their sole source of content. The producers that eschew that will continue to produce and hopefully connect with those of us that can't stand that fucking shit. How do we maximize access and discovery to these real producers and not slop farms? That's the question we should be asking. I don't think this will be the demise of Google or any of the big tech platforms. There is plenty of money to be made feeding junk food to the masses. I think we should think about how we generate sufficient discoverability to real creators and get sufficient revenue streams to them that they can keep doing it for a living, or at least a decent paying part time gig. #google #GenAI
@hankg Can I see the announcement?
Google Search as you know it is over | TechCrunch

Google is transforming Search from a list of links into an AI-powered experience filled with conversational answers, autonomous agents, and interactive interfaces — a shift that could further reduce traffic to publishers across the web.

@hankg @nlupo

"Combined, these changes will likely further decimate Google referrals to publishers, which have already been suffering from declining referrals due to AI Overviews. This has put some ad-dependent media operations out of business, and now things will likely get worse."

That's the death of the internet.

@hankg Webrings.
@mark That's something I was thinking could make a come back. I didn't realize it was a proprietary system not an open protocol. Perhaps we could revive the whole thing on an open protocol/self hostable thing?

@mark @hankg it’s been a thing in indieweb for a bit

@hankg Jesus Fucking Christ.

@hankg

I would not being so catastrophic.

Google search was already broken to begin with. Google has a long track history of killing things, and this one looks particularly overkilling that won't even survive the summer.

@hankg Just one more announcement that leaves me incredulous about how stupid these companies can be.
@hankg Time for me to block the Scrooglebot crawler.
@hankg
Dark vision of the future. Not saying it's wrong, though.
@hankg maybe but given big tech’s love of far right bullshit, racism, misogyny, conspiracy theories, etc the societal consequences of 80% of the population only having access to this divisive bollocks is terrifying
