LIRR Strike Continues as Commuters Adjust to Limited Service

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) strike entered its third day, leaving New York City commuters scrambling to find alternative ways to reach work. Thousands of union workers returned to picket lines Monday, demanding pay raises that keep pace with inflation. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) deployed approximately 250 shuttle buses with around 13,000 seats, though only a small fraction of these were used during the morning rush. Negotiations between the unions and MTA saw little progress despite multiple sessions, with both sides trading proposals but remaining separated by less than two percentage points on the final year of a four-year contract. A major sticking point is the MTA's push for increased healthcare contributions for new hires, while unions emphasize that wages should rise to match inflation. Commuters have adapted by working from home, driving, or using subways and buses, though some faced significant inconveniences. Even if a deal were reached, service would take at least a day to resume fully due to necessary inspections and crew preparation.
