Loaded another fifty books onto the resurrected Sony ereader, this time a selection from @standardebooks (which is sort of "What if those free Project Gutenberg books were professionally presented?"). As well as the expected mainstream classics, there are loads of titles from authors like Robert Sheckley, Philip K. Dick, Andre Norton, and Manly Wade Wellman, which is great to see.

My sister reads absolutely nothing throughout the year, but then strangely turns into a voracious bookworm for her annual fortnight holiday in Greece, tearing through seven or eight books, which makes an ereader fairly essential. This year she and her husband have been hit by Amazon's decision to disown arbitrarily "old" Kindle readers; because they don't have a computer she couldn't sideload titles or jailbreak the devices (and I doubt she even knew it was an option), so they've bought two new Kindles, just as Amazon intended.

It's a pity she didn't mention it in advance as I could have sorted a better option, but for her an ereader means a Kindle and convenience wins.

So many reasons not to get locked in by Amazon.

@standardebooks The Sony ereader is working, but not well. In particular it has a hugely annoying habit of skipping chunks of text, which I can only see by changing the text size back and forth. The battery is a bit iffy too.

I was tempted to look for another of the same model, but CeX had a secondhand Pocketbook Verse in stock and I still had a CeX voucher from trading in some old gear… More modern, more storage, more speed, and more options (I can grab a book file from Dropbox, for instance, letting me download something if I'm away from home); it makes a lot more sense than constantly patching up the old Sony, which is a pity but these things don't last forever.

@BigJackBrass @standardebooks That *is* a pity. I saw that coming and just jailbroke my Kindle - though it turns out that my model will be around for a few more years. Best decision I made - moved all my books over there along with library books when I get them. All my read-later articles stored on @wallabag go there too. I love it so much I feel like I should hunt down another just as a backup for once it actually reaches end of life.
