CDC Monitors 41 Individuals for Andes Hantavirus Following Cruise Ship Exposure

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently monitoring 41 people in the United States for potential exposure to the Andes hantavirus, following a rare outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship. Although there are no confirmed cases in the U.S., the virus, which is transmissible from person to person and typically originates from contact with rodent droppings, poses a serious health risk. The monitored group includes 18 passengers who are quarantined in facilities in Nebraska and Georgia, as well as others who may have been exposed during travel, including flights with symptomatic individuals. The CDC emphasizes that those under monitoring should remain at home and avoid contact with others during a 42-day period, which corresponds to the virus's incubation time. Globally, the World Health Organization has confirmed 11 cases among passengers, including three deaths. The agency is not enforcing federal quarantine orders for all monitored individuals, instead tailoring measures based on risk levels and ensuring rapid access to care if symptoms develop. Symptoms typically start flu-like, with fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, and can progress to severe respiratory distress, with a fatality rate of approximately 35 percent. Health officials continue to stress that the overall risk to the general public remains low.
