tasket@starraven @georgetakei Not even close. The goal is to keep the strait un-passable for as long as it takes to 1) rake in massive extra profits, 2) force Europe into a corner, since they are heavily dependent on imports.
Europe will have to choose between taking up Trump's demand to go to the straight and take the oil it needs (return to Imperialism), un-sanction Russia, or endure massive inflation and the "regime change" that comes with it.
That's the goal now. Wasn't when this started because Trump can't look farther ahead than his next diaper change.
@starraven @georgetakei Trump's close advisors like Stephen Miller are running the show. The fact that Trump is becoming (and appears) senile is serving as a convenient cover, IMO.
The Trump regime still has control over Venezuelan exports as well. This is about taking control over global fossil fuel supply and using it as a weapon while they still can, before renewables take over.
And, the administration of waiting for my next Big Mac has only accelerated the switch to renewables.
@starraven Its brinkmanship even if it fails. Trumpists expect to be able to inflict enough economic pain before the energy transition reaches a critical point. Its their last chance to be able to use fossil fuels as a weapon, and they are taking it.
