🎶And little Sir John with his nut-brown bowl
And his brandy in the glass
And little Sir John with his nut-brown bowl
Proved the strongest man at last.

For the huntsman he can't hunt the fox,
Nor so loudly to blow his horn
And the tinker he can't mend kettle nor pot
Without a little barley corn.🎶

Because alcohol conquers the noble and working man, the song seems to be saying.

This is such a great album. #Music #NowPlaying #vinyl #highfidelity #SteveWinwood #Traffic

A "tinker" of course is a man who works in tin, making cooking vessels; the "huntsman" is a practicer of the barbaric sport of fox-hunting. But I'm really here to point out that Winwood, Capaldi and Wood made every note on this album. Here the credits opposite each of the six songs.
And I'll just ramble on to point out that the title song is so beautiful because of the extended metaphor in it, where the three men come out of the west aspiring to "kill" John Barleycorn, actually plant and harvest him/it, and refine him/it into beer and brandy.
