"so basically AVIF is the new JPEG, and JPEG XL is the new PNG."

#avif #jpegXl #jxl

i was mostly thinking about the role they might play when both are widely used on the web, now i'm remembering the lack of proper PNG support in the IE days…

i was also wondering if when #AV2 comes out, it would bring with it new version of AVIF. my guess is *probably not*. VP9 didn't bring a new version of WebP, or at least not a finished one.

i'm guessing with (typically) one less dimension to compress video codec advances just don't bring the same rate of improvement to still images. maybe AV3 will give us AVIF2.

and AV4 will be fought with sticks and stones ... no, wait!
@sofia just this time avif and jpegxl support lossless and lossy compression (where jpg only supports lossy)

@seepr yup. and animations. and alpha channel. :D

AVIF just isn't very good at lossless, but does great low fidelity compression. JXL is awesome for lossless and fairly okay for low fidelity. but given how flexible the format seems to me, we might see some improvements there, too. :D
