I've been playing around with NASA's Voyager 3D model (https://science.nasa.gov/resource/voyager-3d-model/) in Blender to see if I can make a nice looking but still somewhat realistic image.

I know basically nothing about how to use Blender but I did manage to set up sunlight coming from a vaguely plausible direction, then add an approximately Uranus coloured area light behind the camera to fill in the shadows with some blue-green planetshine.

I have a vague idea of getting another custom t-shirt printed if I can come up with a render that I think would work.

My modest attempt at CGI was partially motivated by recently watching this presentation by Jim Blinn on how he created the original Voyager flyby animations between 1977 and 1983. Colour 3D graphics with anti-aliasing, texture mapping, shadow casting and displacement mapping made on a PDP-11 four and a half decades ago!

Back on my self-designed custom nerd shirt bullshit again.

I wasn't sure that my Voyager render would work on a t-shirt because it's all fine details and low contrast, but while it certainly has lost some definition in the transfer printing process I reckon it still looks pretty good, at least at typical t-shirt viewing distances.

While I was ordering that t-shirt for myself I also got a t-shirt done for the kid with one of my Jerry the blue tongue designs on it.
