i want a book club except its for The L Word because this show is such a rich text. and by "rich text" i mean its some of the most batshit television ive seen in a long time

#TheLWord

this is like a social experiment where you can watch this whole cast, all of whom signed up to be part of a serious landmark drama series, realize one by one that theyve been cast in a longform farce.

alice is the first to figure it out.

dana then runs off with her to be silly.

then jenny goes "oh, we're doing unhinged? ok cool, lets do unhinged!"

i havent even finished season two yet.

my money is on bette never figuring it out and acting her heart out until the bitter end.

#TheLWord

omg in season three they take a show about girls kissing and they add a BABY

#TheLWord

Helena has enterred the Oh Shit This Is a Farce chat!

#TheLWord

.
"is the goth girl a vampire, no literally im honestly worried" plotline: immaculate. perfection. no notes.

juxtaposing that with the cancer plotline and existential grief at the loss of career, purpose, and bodily autonomy? fucking transcendant.

and then "who cares if shes nosferatu, the sex is too good" just amazing. did this episode win every tv award ever because it should have.

who did this? seriously, this is amazing.

#TheLWord

okay the non-ubiquity of cell phones has been a big date marker for The L Word but its being eclipsed by the absence of explicit conversations about monogamy and nonmonogamy.

that ambiguity is also driving like half the plotlines in s3 tho so maybe its an intentional artistic choice and not an unconscious reflection of the times?

cause its 2006, and even my boring ass was in a polycule then. talking about this stuff wasnt obscure at the time.

#TheLWord

Bette's eternal character arc is "wait, am i the asshole?" and then she realizes she is in fact the asshole and the season concludes and she never actually stops being the asshole because once the next season starts she discovers that she's the asshole again in completely new ways

#TheLWord

just got to Jenny telling Max that he'll never pass and will always be an outsider like her and wow. i laughed so fucking hard.

cause first, Jenny doesnt know shit about trans issues but boy does she feel justified in shooting her mouth off

and secondly, Jenny is an outsider because she's a eerie little weirdo, and puts concerted effort into being an eerie little weirdo, and cant stop herself from shooting her mouth off at every opportunity

#TheLWord

but this also gets filed under "this show is more cultural artifact than contemporary commentary"

earlier in the scene Max says theyre in a "straight club" which… i honestly have trouble even conceiving as a thing that exists. like nazi bars exist, sure, but thats a different thing.

the idea that my wife and i dancing together in a whistler BC ski chalet might make a roomful of patrons uncomfortable is similarly hard to imagine.

groundbreaking in 2006, normal in 2026.

#TheLWord

i feel like everything you need to know about the quality caliber of The L Word is best illustrated by the key image on amazon prime for this show about lesbians being a kiss between kit and ivan, neither of whom are lesbians.

cause it's like that, top to bottom.

#TheLWord

got to the arc where new character Phyllis has the audacity to come out in her late forties and is consistently treated like a punchline

so thats a mood

Cybill Sheppard is fucking amazing tho

#TheLWord

it is really impressive how every episode leads me to ever deeper levels of disdain for jenny schecter

#TheLWord

every act of solidarity that appears on this show is performed by guest stars. its somehow unthinkable for main cast to show compassion to anyone who isnt a personal friend.

it is so fucking weird.

#TheLWord

episodes early in the season: we dont need to talk to each other before we { fuck | have a child | start a business | live in the same house | create media about each other }

episodes in the middle of the season: oh wait

episodes at the end of the season: we should talk.

#TheLWord

Shane has FINALLY enterred the Oh Shit This Is a Farce chat!

It only took four whole seasons

#TheLWord

me, looking dubiously at the screen where some hot new character has taken off her shirt: "huh. my tits are bigger than hers."
@miriamrobern I watched the first season and was so put off by how just terrible everyone was? This kinda encapsulates what I couldn't express at the time.
@miriamrobern i haven't seen this show in like 15 years but i still hate jenny

actually i should rewatch it now that i'm a girl :3
