#MineralMonday 💎 Lamprophyres (from the Greek lamprós = "bright" and phýro = to mix) were named by German geologist Carl Wilhelm von Gümbel in 1874, describing rocks rich with mica and amphiboles/pyroxens crystals - "glittering bright" on a fresh rock surface and inspiring the name.

The drawings showing thin sections are from GÜMBEL 1879, the modern photos show mica crystals embedded in a feldspar/amphibole (?) matrix and a single large pyroxen crystal in section.
