2/3 Harvey Goodwin, 58th Bishop of Carlisle, by Hamo Thorneycroft, 1894. When I was a paper boy half a century ago Harvey Goodwin Avenue in Cambridge, where he's remembered for the Industrial School he founded, was on my round. And here he is in a far northern city.

Samuel Waldegrave, 57th Bishop of Carlisle, by John Adams-Acton, 1874. Waldegrave was a renowned firebrand evangelical of the kind then already going out of fashion. One obituary noted 'Never were the tones of his softly-breathed words in the pulpit so affecting as when he spoke of the poor sinner!'
