Looking for an obscure game:

  • Worms-like (turn based deathmatch);
  • 3D;
  • Deformable heightmap terrain;
  • Played somewhere in late 2000s/early 2010s;
  • Very low production value;
  • Likely official modding support, probably involving OBJ model files.

I'd rather not use the centralized forum platform where #TipOfMyTongue exists.

Also accepting hashtag suggestions if I'm missing any useful ones.

I remember it having different characters/buildings, one of them looked like one of those Hoth turrets from star wars, the truncated cone with a flatish disc on top where the gun is. Unclear if it was a mod or I'm just dreaming that though.

Have a nice week!

Edited due to typo, it was 1am sorry lol
Edit2: probably enough boosts, it's exceedingly likely it's Scorched3D.

@kroltan Hogs of War? Edit: Ah probably no modding support on that..

@abban Hmm interesting, it might very well be that, but I don't remember it having cutscenes and I feel like the graphics were maybe even more primitive. Seems like a neat game anyways!

The modding point is unclear, it might be that it just had open .OBJ files in the installation directory or something.

EDIT: Even more promising, I was reading reviews on GOG, and one of them commented the AI enemies don't move around, which does sound like something I may have experienced.

@kroltan Any idea what system / OS you played it on?
@loadhigh 99.9% sure on a desktop windows XP computer. Other 0.1% would be a PlayStation 1.
@kroltan I'm sure it's not this, but this just reminded me of myself playing Gunbound on the PC during that timeline.
@kroltan Scorched 3D?

@sikeSapi Looks extremely promising!

Since I used to get games by dumpster-diving "download aggregator" websites, a free game makes total sense. And open source makes it likely it uses non-packed assets for modding!

With all due kindness to the authors, it also looks about the right amount of jank.

@kroltan Any chance you're thinking of Liero? https://www.liero.be/

(There has also since been an OpenLieroX: https://www.openlierox.net/ )

EDIT: Sorry, I misread. With the 3D part and no mention of actual worms, maybe you mean Scorched3D? http://www.scorched3d.co.uk/ Basically just Scorched Earth in 3D. It's actually a pretty good job of it too IMO. Lot of fun.

Liero - Official website

liero game open source

@nazokiyoubinbou @kroltan haven't thought about liero in decades. I played so many death matches of Liero in the high school computer lab. Loved the movement with the grappling hook!

@scribblemacher @kroltan It's rather hard to beat at the price range it shipped at of $0.00. 😁

Apparently it was all the rage at school campuses?

@nazokiyoubinbou S3D does seem like the most likely candidate so far! Thanks!

@kroltan Ok, other posts loaded in though. You played whatever you're looking for on Playstation 1? Scorched 3D was definitely PC only.

I'm drawing a blank for the PS1 really.

@nazokiyoubinbou No no, almost certainly PC, with only the slightest chance it would be on the PS1.

@kroltan Alright, well Scorched 3D certainly seems to fit anyway if PC only. Good luck.

If nothing else it's pretty hecking fun on its own.
