#WildFlowerHour

So, apparently, Pignut is set to take over the Universe.

I've never seen it in such profusion anywhere round here before.

@botvolution you all really give your plants the funkiest names over there

@MLE_online
Later in the year I'll be able to post pics of Burnet Saxifrage, which, of course, is unrelated to either Burnet or Saxifrage.

(The Wikipedia article on Pignut has a delightful quote from Culpeper which is worth reading)

@botvolution I think I would call anything that looks like that queen anne's lace, unless I specifically know it to be a carrot or something
@MLE_online
In the US i think that refers to Daucus carota, wild carrot. A plant i particularly like. Taller than pignut and comes a bit later in the season. Ive heard uk use of QAL to mean Cow Parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris).
@botvolution I just don't know the difference between a lot of these carrot family plants based on flowers alone. If they have white clusters of flowers like that, they all kind of look the same to me.
@MLE_online
Wild carrot has a unique feature of the weird bracts, plus they very often have a single dark red floweret in the centre of the umbel.
Leaf forms and location are the usual clues for ID.
I can never distinguish cow parsley from rough chervil though.
@botvolution I will have to start paying attention to the flowers of these things. there seems to be a wealth of things to notice
