Dr. Victoria Grinberg

On one hand, I do sometimes feel lonely and would love more friends in my life.

On the other hand, here is me and two of my friends trying to find a time to meet up for a crafting/art afternoon and the only time that works for all three of us is end of June.

Adult friendships are hard - double so while having interesting, challenging jobs ;_;

@vicgrinberg wrote a friend I haven't written in over half a year. We phoned some and then I spontaneously decided to drive over the next day.

It can be quite easy if you're having zero responsibilities as a mid-30 except for working and studying ^^

@vicgrinberg I feel this. Additionally, as a former academic, the circle of friends I found working in academia is now scattered through the world after leaving for postdoc stays, or starting at different companies...

@CodingPhysicist yeah, same problem as someone who still works in research and also not in her "home" country - I have great friends who live in different countries and partially overseas :(

@vicgrinberg I mostly deal with it by having a nicely set up guest room that all my friends are free to use whenever they pass by. And I do the same and visit whenever I happen to be nearby. In addition to planned visits and meets, that kind of works.

@CodingPhysicist those are nice things that work for me, too, but I still miss having a local bunch of folks you can rely on to spontaneously grab a coffee or leave a key with or just go explore your own city.

@vicgrinberg No, I understand that and completely agree 🙂 I miss that too. Not being the most extroverted person doesn't really help either.

@vicgrinberg My friend just started a monthly Craft & Spraff, one Sunday a month at a different pub each time. The idea is you come when you can, bringing whatever you are working on for a few hours. Building in informal things regularly seems to be a way to get ahead of the scheduling conundrum. I want to host something like this eventually.
