Should we work with far right parties?

It's a question and a criticism that is often thrown at us. We are called anti-democratic for not working with parties who - by and large - won their seats in free and fair elections.

But democracy is more than the ballot box. It's working within and respecting the law, which these parties often do not. It's about being held to account by a free press, which the parties resist and suppress.

It's about rejecting ideologies that we as a society have deemed unacceptable, which these parties often do not.

We do not reject far right voters. We understand that traditional parties have failed to solve the problems set before them. And it's up to us politicians, without compromising an inch on our core beliefs on democracy, to win them back.

@VoltEuropa
I understand this does not imply, that any proposal backed by a far-right party is rejected without considerations beyond the other ideologies of its supporters. Am I correct?
@VoltEuropa Just because a party is democratically voted into the parliament it doesn’t mean other parties have to collaborate with it. It’s also your democratic right to deny collaboration.
If you would collaborate with them in any way I would skip you if my personal list of eligible parties. That’s my democratic right.

@VoltEuropa For me, a democratic politician lives, strengthens and expands democracy by debate.

Debate, and following laws and regulations are the whole frame.

For anti-democratic parties debate is not the whole frame. Often violence is part of the frame too; whether physical violence or misrepresenting, denying common truths. This is though scarcely debated.

My synthesis is: first debate anti-democratic parties about the role of violence in their politics before debating practical things.

@spdrnl
you miss half of the deal: you can debate with willing counterparts that gives you the same respect you give them. debating just for the sake of it is useless and wasteful.
debating with violent thugs is often dangerous: while you talk they strike you (see russia, israel, usa).
@VoltEuropa
@VoltEuropa #vvd far right party in the netherlands ruled out a government and cooperation with leftwing #pvda #groenlinks So, who is undemocratic? As a democratic party you don’t have to work with party’s with extreme other views. You look for oppertunitys to realise your own views.
