I think it was about $2-4 to the £ back then. (A dollar originally meant a coin worth 5 shillings, 20 shillings in a pound, so for many years £1 = $4)

The benefit was supposedly a plethora of ways to divide by even numbers without ending up in fractions.

Never had to deal with, the change to "new money" (pounds and pence) happened 6-7 years before I moved there.
