@Priyajsridhar I'm going to twist this slightly and say my most formative work set in space was The Crystal Singer by Anne McCaffrey.

I love the Crystal Singer books. Especially the interesting direction she chose to take the series as she write more of them. Not the easy choice--Anne could have just written more of the same, but she pushed herself as a writer and gave us better books with more complex characters.

Right? I know there's a lot of stuff from that era that doesn't read well now but McCaffrey always brought us something new.
