There’s a really good book to be written about this bit of imperial mentality. Might well have been for all I know.

There's a prescient warning about this at the end of Nurkse's "Empire of the Absurd", which is one of the most darkly hilarious books I've read and IMHO necessary reading for anyone interested in the #USSR / #Soviet #Union

Oh and if you haven't read Zygar's The Dark Side of the Earth, that's also a definite must read. It's a popular history and I can guess historians will have Opinions about some of its contents, but like Svetlana Alexievich's Secondhand Time, it is a *fantastic* documentary into the mentality.
