Somebody wanna explain to me how the hell a 28-year-old video codec (MPEG-4) is still #patent encumbered?

Wikipedia: “…one of the US patents in the MPEG LA H.264 pool (granted in 2016) lasts at least until November 2030.”

You mean to tell me you can invent something, patent it 13 years later, and get #patent protection for more than 27 years after invention?!

This technology is a museum piece! Why the hell are people not up in arms over it still being encumbered?
