He'd studied documents from Greenland and Iceland in the Vatican.
It was known his ships weren't provisioned enough to reach the Indies. Perhaps he suspected the existence of North America or was an idiot.

Idiot, i don't know. Cruel beyond measure, definitely. His treatment of the natives landed him in a Spanish jail and his name was removed from history until restored centuries later. And that's why the continent is called "America" and not "Columbia".
