Serious question for the #WritingCommunity โ€” does anyone else really *never* catalogue other people's eye colors? I mean, I've gone decades not knowing the eye colors of my friends, family...

...wives. (whoops)

But, seriously, nearly every time a narrator in a story I'm reading takes a beat to describe an eye color of another characterโ€”unless there is a strong emotional component to itโ€”it just sounds too "writerly" to me.

@Mark_Harbinger

I do know the eye colors of my husband and my children. I'm less sure about all my grandchildren and rarely recall anyone else's. I usually only mention my characters' eye colors when it's necessary to the plot. The mages' eye colors often shift when using their powers, for example.

@crcollins

Ah, that's a nice touch in your magic system to ground it and add drama. Kudos.

I bet WRT grandkids that'll be a detail I'll soak in. None, as of yet, though. ;-)

I love the quote on your profile page ๐Ÿ˜€

@crcollins

Thank you. ๐Ÿ˜Ž ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ‘

@Mark_Harbinger I genuinely notice the eye colours of most people I meet, Iโ€™m afraid! Maybe itโ€™s *because* Iโ€™m a writer, though ๐Ÿ˜†
@astronomerritt @Mark_Harbinger LOL. A few years ago, after many years of marriage, when I was filling out a passport renewal application for my husband, I had to ask him are your eyes green or blue? They actually change depending on what colors he is wearing. :) I wanted to know what they were officially listed as. <g>

@nomdeb @astronomerritt

there you go... Thank you! ๐Ÿ˜‚

@astronomerritt

Makes sense.

I'll notice eyes that are *striking*, for sure! But I'm not sure, even then, that I notice the color, specifically...

I certainly don't have that internal monologue churning on it, ha ha
