Using #AI to value art.

I couldn't help thinking "Well, duh!" when the writer comes to the conclusion that art world success isn't about the art but about networking - who you know:

"The problem wasn’t just the AI. It was the training data itself—reflecting a market distorted by social and economic biases. Unlike object detection or medical imaging, visual quality in art can’t be objectively quantified. And because our dataset largely consisted of works already “validated” by the market, we ended up reinforcing circular patterns."

Is A Random Unknown Artist More Valuable Than Picasso? AI Thinks So.

We built an AI model to see whether artificial intelligence could bring more transparency to the art market. The data was striking.

I thought this use of #AI was particularly interesting.

Basically, AI was unable to predict the value of an art piece until it was given the name of the artist who made it.

Basically the value of any #artwork is primarily the name attached to it.

#Art

And I've at least partly understood this for a long time, since I was at university. I noticed how celebrities sometimes make art and even though their art might be nothing special, their work can be desirable.

It's quite a sobering thought that the quality of your #art practice won't necessarily be appreciated widely in the #ArtWorld.

But I have long noticed how famous artists can create nothing-special work and it sells, and I've noticed great art can also get little recognition.

I also think that artists are often inspired by lesser known artists more than bigger names. That the bigger names might equate to value but not necessarily to how appreciated they are.

And that's what art courses at university are for, especially the well known, difficult to get onto courses.

They are there to authenticate an artist to say they are a 'real' artist and not a fraud or amateur. They grade artists so it is safe for investors to buy their art.

Because when you have #ProcessPaintings or #AbstractPaintings it can be impossible to tell if the artist is just having meaningless fun or whether they are both serious and talented. How do you know whether a work is cutting edge and intelligent or just a load of crap?

Universities and later #galleries work to authenticate names and later uphold their integrity.

Basically, the value of art is entirely in the name.

#Art #Value

But having said that, there is liberation in knowing that. Also lots of artists make a living selling online directly to buyers or fans.

Online Selling has democratised things a little. Artists no longer need to get approval from galleries and an #ArtCareer is possible without it.

But also, this is why I decided to give up on a career as an #artist and instead start my own business eleven or so years ago.

Since networking is crucial and I have no interest in networking, I realised it wasn't something I would necessarily succeed at.

I would still like a career as an artist, but at the moment I'm doing fine with my own art related business.
