Most of our users aren't active on these social media platforms and don't receive news about GrapheneOS beyond our release notes. Hundreds of thousands of people use it as a daily driver without closely following the project. We plan to reduce our dependence on these platforms.
We'll be extending our Info app with a News section. It can have configurable categories so people only see the parts which interest them. We could also use the Info app to provide a way for people to volunteer to help us with categories of tasks and receive alerts about those.
We can migrate towards posting longer form content made available via our discussion forum and Info app. It can still be posted to these platforms but without relying on them so much. Our news posts don't reach most of our users this way and it heavily limits how we can post too.
We aren't saying we're going to stop posting on these platforms. It means the posts on our timeline will shift towards being links to forum threads with longer form content. We can have proper formatting, edits and a more unified discussion primarily happening on our forum.
@GrapheneOS Why not simply use Mastodon/lemmy? Unless there's a burning desire to control and defederate, the Fediverse should be just fine(?). It's already quite big and the biggest alternative to the monopolized platforms.
@vas The software is low quality, there are many issues with federation and it has by far the most hostile overall userbase towards us out of X, Bluesky, Facebook, LinkedIn, Reddit and beyond. It's definitely not going to become our main platform.
@GrapheneOS I think I cannot understand the value in choosing platforms where people just tend to agree. Even if, say, Facebook herds or creates the impression of having lots of people like that. That being said, since the published plan is to use open-source independent solutions and not actually the mentioned monopolies, it's something that I can live with as a GOS user. I tend to somewhat distrust ppl who continue to operate on a platform who's owner nazi-salutes though.

@vas People relentlessly pushing fabrications about GrapheneOS and our team on the fediverse is not disagreement.

It's strange to talk about there being nazis on X when the fediverse has a massive issue with it too but also much more including Child Sex Abuse Material. Twitter became more similar to the content on the fediverse post-Elon in these regards. You're on an instance federating with far worse platforms than X where admins engage in harassment, racism, etc. What about those?

@GrapheneOS @vas What instances are you referring to? Even though they have a strict anti-hate policy and block other instances, they then choose to let some Nazis and child predators through? Why?

Comparing harm/effect of an individual Mastadon instance with Elon's/X seems wildly wrong. There are no Nazis and hate at the edges on X. They are promoted and shared openly by its owner.

Completely different living in a neighborhood with a Nazi in it, than living in the apartment building he built.
