Two forest fires in Japan's northeastern prefecture of Iwate are still raging, with flames confirmed to be spreading toward the center of a town. More than 2,500 residents, or about a quarter of the municipality's population, are now under an evacuation order.

Was wondering why Japan's firefighting efforts were limited to helicopters with water buckets. Seems they trialled a converted PS-1 flying boat as well as a Canadian CL-215 in the 1970s, but cost-performance and proximity of dwellings to Japan's forests proved to be barriers to adoption.

Also, seems forest fires in Japan were caused mainly by careless people, so education and penalties might be the first line in fire prevention.
