They didn’t used to be, but I don’t think anyone would argue against that now. They had value until trust was broken, but trust can be broken really quickly, and that’s been done, and it’s incredibly difficult to repair once that’s been done, and conflict becomes pretty much inevitable.
The last time we had a whole bunch of international treaties and alliances all become worthless like this I’m pretty sure it was because some archduke guy died and everyone’s international treaties automatically put them into conflict with everyone else’s international treaties and very quickly trust broke down and the whole system fell apart. Ancient history. /s
