He could never remember them both.

Some days, the princess - eyes and hair lustrous and dark, soft voice pleading with him to leave - was clear in his mind.

Some days the dragon - eyes and scales lustrous and bright, broken voice pleading for mercy.

One or the other; he couldn't remember both.

@MicroSFF This is great! I hate it!
@MicroSFF Someone needs to install more memory. 😅💭
@MicroSFF @futzle Dammit, O, you’d get my Hugo vote.
@MicroSFF I still don't get it. The dragon transformed?

@MicroSFF

i have to admit that i don't understand this one. It reads to me like the man (a knight? a warrior?) is having a mental breakdown because he killed the dragon thinking he was saving the princess only to realize that the dragon and the princess were actually just friends, and the princess wanted him to leave them alone, and the dragon was actually not violent.

@moriel Yes, pretty much.

It was posted on Saint George's Day, and inspired by the legend about him killing a dragon.

In that story, the dragon is demanding tribute from a city, and when they run out of treasure they offer people, eventually offering their princess. The knight George sees her, and she asks him to leave so he won't be killed.
