@theking so the image they used is clickbait, sunken containers are considered logistically impossible due to the costs involved so unless it has something that would endanger marine life in a significant way (like medicine, batteries, and heavy metals) it's not done.

BUT

there is a concept known as abandoned cargo, which happens quite a lot especially for cargo containers used by smaller companies. basically from what i understand you have to declare and retrieve the container when it lands in the port (this includes the other half of the payments since freight payments are usually done in two halves,) if you don't do that it goes to either customs, the traffic manager, or the company that owns the ship. they will usually sell or auction off the container at the cost it took to handle it in the port and the shipping fees for that individual container.
