It's great to have Dr. Rumman Chowdhury and Jason Del Rey taking the stage at #QlikConnect to talk with James Fisher of Qlik about the future of AI. Here are some key points. I've been listening to Dr. Chowdhury in particular for years and she has incredible, nuanced knowledge of AI.
Del Ray says "it's an amazing time for curious people with technical expertise" because of everything that's happening with AI. He says expertise is the most valuable thing.
Dr. Chowdhury says "AI gives us knowledge synthesis" but you need the discernment to know what to do with the output and to know whether it's correct.
Audience question: "I want to do something that's meaningful (solve business problems), not just AI for AI's sake". Dr. Chowdhury says you don't have to throw AI at every problem and you need to define your problem space, identify measurable outcomes, and discard things that don't deliver results.
Fisher says a lot of customer discussion on AI centers around cost and compute capacity, but we need to also consider the resource consumption.
Chowdhury says not everyone is considering sustainability with AI, but it consumes a lot of water, gas, and electricity. "We're being forced to look at something we've been ignoring." Del Rey says these problems are being kicked down the road but that people are really concerned about it.
There's an opportunity gap in AI. Del Rey says "true curiosity can help close that gap.” Dr. Chowdhury says many people can try AI because it's widely available, but not everyone is able to do this. She wishes companies would give access for disadvantaged people to "play with technology."
Another audience question on the future of work. People at this conference are at an advantage because they're data-focused. Dr. Chowdhury points out that young people need to develop generalizable skills not just learning prompt engineering.
What does AI mean and what will it mean next? Del Rey points out that the "AI layoffs" are misguided because we will need those people in coming years to manage these systems.
