Another important poll:

Do you “play politics” in life?

Regularly, and I enjoy it
Regularly, and I hate it
Only when absolutely necessary
Rarely, but people still think I am
Rarely, and not doing so can cause problems
Never
Other, who taught you to write polls?
Poll ends at .
@tayfonay I think many (though by no means all) people in the rarely-never end of the spectrum are swimming in it and can't see it. I get on so well professionally and get my way so disproportionately often I'm sure I do it without thinking about it.

@maxleibman @tayfonay I agree: at risk of being a reply gal: It seems many people see obvious power plays as politics,

but rarely think that supporting people or projects (already aligned with the core purpose) are also politics -because- of how politics is so often portrayed as a nasty power play.

Same with just being decent to other people, or occasionally buying treats: those actions affect how people respond to you and your ideas, and that's part of politics. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Politics

@tayfonay Also, that last option—your poll game is on fleek.
@tayfonay [mustache twirling intensifies]
@tayfonay I boosted this but I don’t actually understand the question if I’m being honest. Does that mean you’re politically active?
@LoganFive No, interpersonal politics. Games. Like at work and such. But thanks for the boost! 😁
@tayfonay Oooh! I’ve gotten caught up in it before but I try to stay as far away from it as I possibly can.

@tayfonay
I don't really love it or hate it; it's just part of work.

The fact is, in any organization of more than a few people, there will be disputes about resources and priorities that are affected by personalities. Navigating those conflicts (for the good of the org or for yourself) is politics. It's unavoidable, even when collaborators are united in purpose and ethics.

@tayfonay

One of my favorite things to do is connect other people. Someone wants a job? Someone looking for a charity to support? Someone needs a walking buddy? So much of the politics I do in life is just "knowing someone" and being willing to put people together. I'm counting that as politics because I also do it to improve my cachet and get what I want.

@tayfonay hot take: “politics” is just getting someone else to do something
@tayfonay I have been routinely been pulled into politics, you can't avoid it. But I never seek it? Where does the put me in the polling?

@tayfonay

I prefer not to play politics in interpersonal relationships, and I avoid making friends with people who make it necessary, but certain family members…

Sigh

@tayfonay I grew up with an extremely controlling father who liked meddling with everyone and everything. I understand the thought process behind these. And I try very hard not to give in to the manipulation and controlling desires. I guess I should vote never. But I don’t trust myself some times
@tayfonay Stay as far away as possible, but then get blamed for it anyway, likely because not playing it puts a target on your back.
