Struggling to pay attention? Here's what's happening in your brain

If it feels harder to concentrate than it used to, it's not just you. Scientists say your brain is reacting exactly as it was designed to — but in a very different world.

"#Research shows that constant #distractions take a major toll on productivity and #wellbeing, and this has worsened over the past two decades. In fact, we spend an average of 47 seconds on a screen before shifting our attention, down from two-and-a-half minutes in 2004.

In the age of constant notifications from our phones, computers and watches, some experts fear that our growing inability to focus is leaving us vulnerable to mis- and #disinformation."

@Heliograph yes no 100% concur this is happening to me too 😬 😒
@Irisherself maaan midsentence i can't come up with names if have spoken a million times before 😬 😩
@Heliograph ...or enter/leave a room and forgetting why on the way out
@Irisherself  i feel like i have holes in my head and what makes it worse is it feels like this is deliberate  #brainless #manipulated

@Heliograph it seemed to me like the article author got distracted writing their article on attention, and when they got back to it they continued writing their article on misinformation.

Luckily they quickly circled back to the main theme.

TIL what I’ve been doing for decades is called “lateral reading”

@ozeng *circled back* 😭
@Heliograph why sads? (just finished coffee #1 after 2 hours of wakeful deprivation, so I’m not functional yet)
