Old Pappus Book of Mathematical Calligraphy (2014) https://loopspace.mathforge.org/CountingOnMyFingers/Calligraphy/

"By using a little of this art of letter-forming, a mathematician can ensure that these strange symbols that she uses are clear both to others and, six months later on, to herself. There are many, many books that explain how to do calligraphy and which explain in detail how to form the letters. However, calligraphy for mathematicians is slightly different to calligraphy in general."

@safest_integer Very interesting, but I really don't like what the author passes off as a Fraktur, and I don't see what the big deal is with writing roundhand/engrosser's script with chalk. Chalk is perfect for both.

Whiteboard markers, in contrast, make it hard or impossible. The widest chisel marker I've been able to find is only 10 mm, which is good enough to write Fraktur and italic for a smallish lecture theatre (around 150 people).

The next challenge, though, is that students taking notes rarely have pens for Fraktur and italic. But I see this as necessarily their problem – they have to figure out solutions that work for their own handwriting, and at most we can offer suggestions. It's getting harder, too, as ever more of them come to university without handwriting skills for note-taking.
