Before the Industrial Revolution, atmospheric carbon dioxide remained near 280 parts per million (ppm) for hundreds of thousands of years. Human activity pushed it to 430 ppm in just two centuries. In May 2025, CO₂ reached a seasonal peak of 430.5 ppm at Mauna Loa Observatory—the highest level in millions of years, according to NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
