when I was 11 we went on a trip through Turkey with the whole family - the last vacation with both my older brothers and both our parents, I think. One place we went to was near Bodrum — and Bodrum was a small town then. We took the dolmuş, small route bus, out along the coast until we arrived in a fishermen’s village with hardly any development, but for two tiny hotels - one of which was only just built, still half unfinished, but taking guests, so that’s where we stayed, with the scent of fresh paint, and the scent of fish from the harbour.

Wind a couple of decades on, and when I returned there everyone who heard I had been in the 80s said: “should have bought land then”. It is now the most upmarket marinas of Bodrum, and of the eastern Mediterranean.
