The problem with scientific organizations is that politically, you want them to be large to have influence, but scientifically, you have nothing in common with many of the members. You have to pick influence or shared scientific values. (I am not a member of any organization).
@lakens I agree with regard to political influence. But that is far down my list of reasons to belong to scientific organizations. The Psychonomic Society, Society for the Improvement of Psychological Science, and even APS and APA provide multiple and diverse kinds of social and communication support and a network/system in which scientists can and do work to improve psychological science.
