My grandfather was a coal miner in Leigh, Lancashire.

He was only 4'6" through malnutrition, though that was helpful in working in the infamous four-foot seams.

I recently re-read Orwell's "Road to Wigan Pier" (next town over from Leigh).

His descriptions of life in the mines match my grandfather's.

During the 1972 miners strike, I billeted some Geordie miners for their march on London as I was at university nearby. At least their conditions were better, they were bigger and stronger than me, but still grey-skinned from the coal dust.
