Hi!

I've been trying to figure out what a web based fan club looks like in 2026.

I very nearly went with an 80s BBC + an IRC door + a Discord < - > IRC bridge but no matter how much I talk about it, I can't bring myself to let Discord own my primary communication platform with the majority of our community.

I won't endorse them, even tacitly.

And so now I'm back to exploring how we do this on the open web.

And I don't know! I don't have a good answer.

This is a thread.

To be clear I dropped Discord the moment it started adding clauses to the EULA not long after it had launched so I'm guessing at what Discord features you think might be useful:

the Misskey variant I'm on - Sharkey - has mark down and other text enhancements along with Channels which are essentially text chat hangouts, they can have banner images and MOD. As secure as posting on the
#fediverse (ie unencrypted and basically invisible to non participants)

For impromptu voice/video and text chat that is sort of secure ( direct peer to peer for 2 users, switches to a video bridge for over 2 users) an off the shelf low hassle option is Jitsi - works with most browsers.

@Theriac The biggest feature Discord brings to the table is that a lot of people already have an account so it's a low barrier to entry for new members.

But I don't want to use discord, I just want a low barrier to entry for new members.

I consider anything on the fediverse to have an unreasonably high barrier to entry for non-technical users, but I could probably be convinced otherwise.

If we do voice or video it would be peertube live, and unidirectional.

@ajroach42
So - a persistent chat channel with a low barrier to entry?

Look into Sharkey, unless you're looking to set up your own instance, all that's required is an instance account and a web browser.
