Wylfa power station can begin that promises 8,000 new jobs - Feddit UK

I’m sorry I’m not high enough for that title. LOL. WTF is it trying to say?

Wylfa power station can begin that promises 8,000 new jobs

The article itself now has the slightly clearer title of:

“Green light to build nuclear power station that promises 8,000 jobs”

You know what. In the morning then original title doesn’t sound so bad. Haha. My late night brain was like WTF is happening?!

How does a power station create 8000 jobs? That sounds like ten times or more manpower it ordinarily takes to run a nuclear power station. Even the nei lobbying website says, “Each nuclear power plant employs 500 to 800 workers.”

Jobs

The nuclear energy industry is a powerful engine for job creation. Nuclear plants directly employ more than 70,000 people in high-quality jobs.

As with any "creates n-thousand jobs’ headline, they tend to inflate the numbers by including things such as the jobs during its construction and the “support jobs” that are required for for the workers (in construction and then operation).

That’s including stuff like “some of them will get a sandwich at lunchtime, so the sandwich shop will need some extra staff” and so on, as well as the support jobs for the running of the plant e.g. materials delivery, extra uranium mining or whatever.

Even so, it still seems a pretty large number, even if you’re including “extra teachers and landlords and barstaff” or whatever.

It’s like this theme park they’re building in Bedford. They claim is going to create thousands of jobs. It will create some jobs for sure but they’re also including the IT support staff in that number, but they are contractors so they already have a job anyway.
“Well, the shareholders of the theme park will need new yachts, so there’s all the new jobs making and staffing the yachts, […] and the cleaners of the yachts will need to eat gruel, so that’s some extra jobs for oat farmers”
