Just tried filling out a New York Times survey (in hopes there would be a free-form comment box.. there wasn't).

The last question was "where do you primarily get your news?" -- options included broadcast TV, various social media sites (a couple of which I've heard of), various magazines, some apps, I think, etc...

Nowhere was NPR an option.

I picked "Broadcast, ABC, CBS, PBS, NBC, Etc." because PBS was on the list and that was as close to NPR as they had available to pick.

Seriously?

I'd been hoping for a free-form comment box so I could explain that I am *not* a subscriber and never will be so long as that paywall exists. The high quality reporting of the New York Times is too important for public discourse and for democracy to be behind a paywall.

If they would make *new* articles available only to subscribers for perhaps a week -- and after that they become available to any and all as a public resource/reference -- then I would absolutely subscribe to support them.

But I won't pay to support a paywall.
