Magyar Péter's party (Tisza) won with a historic landslide.
I am overjoyed that Orbán and his gang are out.

But at the same time I'm waiting.

Waiting to see the book bans lifted.
For trans rights to be reinstated.
For the child protection system to be fixed.
For queer people to be allowed to adopt again.
For the child traffic rings to be prosecuted.

We handed a center-right party absolute majority.

I really, really hope they will do better.

@TarkabarkaHolgy Supposedly they're going to produce a new constitution and with their desire to be closer to the EU they will have to provide parity for LGBT people, so we will wait with baited breath.

@BigTittyBimbo @TarkabarkaHolgy

It's a mover in the right direction, but nothing will quickly change because Orban's people are so embedded in so many things. Also he's not a socialist or liberal.

I hope it's the start of better things.

@TarkabarkaHolgy This moment echoes way too much of Fidesz's landslide victory in 2010. A historical chance. How will it be used?
@szakib Right?? I feel like such a jaded Elder Millennial for not cheering yet.
Mostly because I am also sleep deprived

@TarkabarkaHolgy @szakib I'm in similar shoes, don't really feel like celebrating, even though yesterday accomplished not one, but two things I did not think would happen in my lifetime: Orbán is gone, and so is the old opposition. Both are worth celebrating, even if we don't trust Tisza at face value just yet.

And also: having watched a number of interviews with young voters, they kept echoing similar sentiments: they gave Tisza their 2/3, if the new government tries to fuck them over, they'll just as easily take it away. This isn't something I've seen in 20101.

That their own voters are ready to hold them accountable makes me cautiously optimistic.

  • Though, 2010 was a long time ago, and I paid far less attention to politics back then. ↩︎

  • @TarkabarkaHolgy @szakib I really hope they fix the fucked up election system and implement proportional representation for good. I hope that they know that absolute power corrupts absolutely, and be restrained with it after having reinstated rule of law and democratic institutions. I hope that they will slide leftwards as the extreme right is already served by more than enough parties. I hope they stay true to their promises. slightly optimistic!

    @TarkabarkaHolgy
    Agreed. Time to see receipts but at least Hungary is a democracy again. Magyar knows he can be voted out.

    🇭🇺

    @taatm @TarkabarkaHolgy Yep. And I'll take the win that for a few critical years now, Hungary won't be sabotaging Ukraine in the EU.
    @TarkabarkaHolgy We went through this in 2022 (not so bad, but....) with absolutely disappointing results: current govt not much better than the last. Grrr...
    @TarkabarkaHolgy yep, absolutely same for me. waiting and watching next actions
