It turns out that animated AVIFs are technically images, they are lightweight, and I can use them in Markdown.

@thibaultamartin AVIF is the choice nowadays for all images, photos and short animations. It took too long to get to this point!
Public information: if you upload an AVIF file to Mastodon, it will be converted into a JPEG :(
