Polaroid 690s are equipped with a manual focus switch. Inside the front plate chassis is a little spring and a clip, which is just a tiny plastic bit and is prone to failure. Mine broke today. I'm not much of a repair wizard, so I won't open the case, but have MacGuyvered it instead. Jamming this toothpick into the switch while it's toggled does the trick!

@vga256 What I was doing was sticking my hand in front of the grille and then autofocusing to focus at 0.3m, but then I had to hold my finger half-pressed on the shutter button and it was super awkward to get the focus I wanted. Toothpick to the rescue!
