I had forgotten why I had stopped playing 3rd Strike.

My hands just cramp up super quickly now using pad. I tried to get used to a leverless controller but it never clicked for me (which tracks since I dislike playing on keyboard which is mostly the same thing).

Is anyone working on a brainwave controller for fighting games? Asking for a friend.

@afreytes What about the good old stick?

@VileLasagna I never learned to play on arcade stick, I am not inclined to learn. If the choice was stick, or stop playing, I would just stop.

I guess at my age the muscle memory probably hard to learn/change. I would be interested in doing that with leverless still, but not with stick.

@afreytes see, I thought that for many years too. I never had money for arcades so I grew up entirely unable to play stick. But then I just "fuck it" and got one in my mid thirties. Took a little learning, sure, but I had a good time. Actually been wanting to but a new one, is definitely not bad.

My roots are on keyboard and I currently have only a leverless but as much as I like it, I never really got a strict preference either way, different things were comfier in different controllers.

@VileLasagna I have tried arcade stick a couple of times. I have a couple or arcade sticks; and one is right beside the PC right now! But I just don't like it.

@afreytes OIC, if you've given it a proper go, then I guess that's kind of that. From the way you spoke it sounded like you somewhat gave up by default which had been my own stance for many years.

It's a shame, I myself don't generally like traditional fighting games on pad. Doing the motions feels really tricky. I guess pad pros use the analog (fucking SnakeEyez plays pad, i don't get it, lol) but that to me just sounds and feels alien.

I hope you find your groove. Everyone deserves to mash

@afreytes Without knowing your specifics, I DID have two small details regarding my controllers in terms of tweaking.

When I first got my stick (a 8bit-do), that comes with a square gate (the stick is flat on the sides and physically slips to the diagonals). I changed that to an Octagon gate to try a "less opinionated" experience and found I liked that more

And my leverless is actually a one of a kind type thing. It has a mirrored "lefty layout" due to legacy muscle memory [+1]

@afreytes That muscle memory was from KB so specifically it's unlikely to apply to you, but I tried before hand on KB getting used to directions on the left hand there and didn't really like it

And yes, that is strange from an "action button memory not being shared between controllers" type perspective

But, overall, there is wiggle room on getting that feel just right with different controllers and I get it, being comfortable with your gear goes a long way

I'm sorry about your hands. That's hella frustrating.

I think it's interesting how leverless controllers exist between traditional arcade sticks and keyboards. Those were how my PC friends dipped their toes into competitive FGs instead of pad or regular arcade stick
