Let's be honest, Trump saw what Iran was doing charging tolls on ships in the Strait of Hormuz and jealously thought - "we need to get in on this!"

"No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas," he says, adding "any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!"

"The Blockade will begin shortly."

This is "hold my beer" level of lethal absurdity.

Not to mention - more war crimes that no one in the US appears capable of stopping.

The US is not a signatory to the UN Law of the Seas because it fears such an agreement would interfere in its sovereignty.

I guess that obstinance has led them to this moment where they have little or no standing in disputes in international waters and then instead resort to force and assert military dominance over such waters.

This is why the international rule of law matters and if nations are not even taking part in the setting of and adherence to those laws, they need to be ostracized and condemned, not celebrated as "great democracies."

The warning signs were there all along. This article is from 2019.
