Every time you open Google Maps, it logs where you are, what you searched, and where you went next.

We interviewed the co-founder of Organic Maps, an open source app that collects none of that. New Techlore Talks out now on YouTube: https://youtu.be/XCzVQKLBkhM

@Lenni @techlore Knew about it. Hadn’t read it. Thanks for sharing.
@Lenni Why don't you share the full story? These guys tried to (unsuccessfully) get full control over Organic Maps project, and started spreading lies and misinformation about it after failure. They are illegally using unauthorized source code in their project (without authors' consent), they have stolen unpublished Organic Maps web site redesign, and seized one of the OM's Telegram channels. And now they do aggressive advertising campaign on Organic Maps social media.
@biodranik Can you please share a source on that? I have never heard of it. What kind of source code have they supposedly stolen that wasn't under an open source license?
@Lenni @biodranik the person is the cofounder of organicmaps. So it is trying to spread false information.
@techlore
Good.
But CoMaps is better (governance transparency)
@organicmaps
@niavy Better? These guys tried to (unsuccessfully) get full control over Organic Maps project, and started spreading lies and misinformation about it after failure. @biodranik @niavy
Source please. Without sources you look like a slanderer.

@[email protected] @[email protected] would have been interesting to ask if they ever plan to make the hidden parts accessible too 😅 https://isitreallyfoss.com/projects/organic-maps/

Organic Maps: Is it really foss?

@techlore google maps is disabled on my smartphone. 🤷‍♂️

@techlore

Oh hi, you mentioned a european non-corporate non-cookies no-filters and no-ads basic replacement for googlemaps?

There's another one.

👋

@techlore CoMaps is great. But since the last update Android Auto does not longer work. So it is now useless for me.
@techlore CoMaps >>> Organic Maps
@techlore @nizarus Le problème avec Organic Map est que pour voir un détail (un village, une rue) il faut d'abord télécharger la région. Je voudrais pouvoir zoomer ou télécharger, au choix, selon les circonstances.
@techlore recently google removed all timeline from the web version and it is only available on the phone.
I think that's a GDPR compliance thing?
A really good law.

@techlore

I've tried organic, as well as Osmand+ .. Both don't work for my use case. I use google maps only for finding places nearby and to see the corresponding reviews.
And that’s where I got poor - or even terrible results with these two apps.

Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative app?

Navigation is done by car navi.

Edit: maybe I should say that I live in germany, so foursquare isn't an option and yelp is not used that much here 😂

@techlore Unfortunately these alternatives won’t gain traction until they can provide traffic data.
