Here's a thought that I find freeing. Hopefully, it'll be the same for you.

No one on Mastodon is following *you*.¹ They follow a group of people which happens to include you.

That means you can toot about anything you like and as much or as little as you like. Boost whatever. Don't overthink it; no one is studying your timeline¹.

Thinking someone is following *you* is like a grain of rice thinking it's the reason I'm eating this huge bowl of jollof.

¹ unless your mum is on Mastodon

@davidnjoku To be fair, it's happened a time or two where one person has suddenly liked a bunch of my posts, including ones from months ago. It's not exactly the norm though.

That said, if you held a gun to my head and asked me how many followers I have, I would have no idea. I'd have to look it up, because it's not really a metric I've ever cared about.

@davidnjoku Memories of first encountering jollof in Ibadan in 1970. No I was not following any one grain of rice!
@davidnjoku is "toot" really the official nomenclature for a mastodon post? Is there someone I could talk to about that
@cheekqualizer I still feel embarrassed when I use the word. But, if you think of it, tweet is a silly word too. Just not as silly as toot.
@davidnjoku toot makes me think of a transmission that is not exactly intentional
@cheekqualizer Well, most of my hot takes really stink 😀
@davidnjoku @cheekqualizer I think it helps us be reminded not to take ourselves too seriously.
But I mostly use "post".
@davidnjoku that said, there are still some things funny enough to like but a bit too peppery to boost
@davidnjoku love that small disclaimer 😹 “unless your mum is on mastodon” it made me laugh so hard ❣️😹🩷
But yes, thank you for the reminder to “be yourself” and I will only add “always try to be kind” 🩷
I really have enjoyed my time here! There are so many wonderful people to talk with and share ideas 🩷
@em_and_future_cats So true. The default attitude here is kindness, the polar opposite of Twitter.
